BIOGRAPHY
French/Vietnamese (1907-2001)
Le Pho was an early student at the Indochina Fine Arts College where he worked with Victor Tardieu, a contemporary of Henri Matisse. He continued to study painting at the Paris National College of Fine Arts and eventually went on to teach in Beijing, China.
Le Pho is known for his unique combination of Vietnamese, Chinese, and French techniques. Usually signed in Chinese and in script, he painted traditional Vietnamese subjects of women with flowers, birds and bamboo in a loose impressionist style.
Le Pho's paintings belong in the collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris and many other French Museums. His work has been exhibited at Wally Findlay Galleries, Les Salon des Independents, Galerie Van Loo in Brussels, and Galleries around the United States.
