Philip Allen Conrath specialized in medical illustration after art school, taking anatomy and medical school courses. He was added to the Medical School Staff in 1920. He became an assistant professor of Anatomy and Medical Illustration, the Director of the Section of Medical Illustration at St. Louis University School of Medicine, and the president of the American Association of Medical Illustrators. He became recognized as one of the most outstanding medical illustrators in the country.
