BiographyUlpiano Fernández-Checa y Sanz (1860–1916), known as Ulpiano Checa, was a Spanish painter, sculptor, illustrator, and poster designer. Born in Colmenar de Oreja, Spain, he showed artistic talent early and trained in Madrid at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, later studying in Rome.
He became known for historical and dramatic scenes, often featuring dynamic movement and classical or ancient subjects, painted in a style blending academic art with impressionistic influences.
Checa later moved to Paris, where he achieved international success in major exhibitions such as the Paris Salon and World’s Fairs, gaining awards and recognition across Europe and beyond.
He spent much of his later life traveling and working internationally, especially in France, North Africa, and South America, before dying in Dax, France, in 1916.
