BiographyIrek Szelag (American, b. 1951) is a St. Louis–based artist and art conservator known for combining scientific expertise with a lifelong passion for fine art. Originally from Poland, Szelag developed an early fascination with historic paintings—especially 17th-century Dutch masters—which later shaped his career.
Inspired by the 1969 moon landing, he pursued science and earned a master’s degree in chemistry from the Technical University of Łódź. During his studies he discovered painting restoration, a field that allowed him to unite chemistry with art. This unique combination led him to art conservation, where scientific analysis and artistic sensitivity work hand in hand.
Since founding his own conservation business in St. Louis in 1990, Szelag has restored artworks for private collectors and museums, carefully cleaning, repairing, and preserving treasured paintings. His meticulous process includes examining each piece, testing solvents, removing aged varnish, repairing damage, and matching historic pigments to ensure seamless restoration.
Alongside his conservation work, Szelag is also a prolific painter, having created hundreds of original artworks while continuing to preserve the masterpieces of the past.
