Beyond, the coast falls away in a long recession — a town gathered on the headland, the water pale as milk glass, and successive ranges dissolving into haze. The foreground is worked in heavy impasto, the flowering banks laid on with the palette knife; the distance is rendered thin and atmospheric. That deliberate contrast in handling is the picture's engine, and it is Arnegger at his most assured.
