Each year, Palm Springs, California hosts a modernism week where visitors enjoy tours of local midcentury and modern architecture, art, and design. This year, Kodner Gallery is celebrating with these two pieces of modernist pieces from our own collection. Stop by the gallery today for a small slice of modernism week.





Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976)

Alexander Calder was an American sculptor, who became most famous for his kinetic abstract mobiles. Calder also made sculptural artwork and was an accomplished painter and printmaker. His art reflects his reputation of being a beloved, decent human being who continually searched for fun and humor in that around him. He was highly independent from luxuries and focused on creativity. His last words, "I'll do it myself", tell the story of his life.

Charles Eames was an American architect, designer, and filmmaker. With his wife Ray, the Eames' made groundbreaking contributions to the field of architecture and furniture design. Eames studied architecture at the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis before being dismissed for his overly modern views. His signature lounge chair combined curved wooden planes with winged arms and leather cushions and became an iconic staple of modernist design.
