Élisée Maclet spent much of his life painting the streets, rooftops, and hidden corners of Montmartre, and few subjects suited him more perfectly than the Maquis — the scrappy, village-like quarter that once sprawled beneath the Moulin de la Galette before it was cleared for development. Here, Maclet captures it under a blanket of winter snow, the iconic red mill rising boldly against a pewter sky as a solitary figure makes his way across the hushed, white hillside below. The composition vibrates with Maclet's characteristically direct, textured brushwork and warm chromatic contrasts — the deep reds and blues of the mill and shuttered buildings pushing through the cool whites and grays of the winter scene. A deeply personal subject painted by one of Montmartre's most authentic chroniclers, signed and inscribed by the artist.
