BiographyPritchett Allen Harris (1924–1970) was a distinguished American sculptor and educator. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Harris studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Barnes Foundation, and the University of Pennsylvania. His exceptional talent earned him the prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarship (1950), a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant (1951), and a Fellowship Gold Medal from PAFA (1952). He also studied as a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome. Following his passing, PAFA honored his legacy with a dedicated Allen Harris Memorial Exhibition in 1972. Embodying the raw energy of Mid-Century Abstract Expressionism and Organic Modernism, Girl Soaring bridges the tactile, melted-surface aesthetic of Harry Bertoia with the openwork, biomorphic sculpting of Seymour Lipton and Ibram Lassaw. Harris’s dramatic use of negative space, highly textured bronze, and an architectural travertine limestone pedestal aligns this unique 1964 studio bronze with the finest Brutalist fine art and figurative sculpture of the era.
